ILEARN

ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students and assesses:

• English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8)

• Mathematics (Grades 3-8) 

• Science (Grades 4 and 6)

• Social Studies (Grade 5)

• Biology (High School)

• U.S. Government – Optional (High School)

ILEARN assesses students in Grades 3-8 and High School Biology. ILEARN contributes to annual accountability measures.

ILEARN is a computer-adaptive test for Mathematics and English/Language Arts. Computer-adaptive assessments adjust the test questions students see based on their performance. This adaptation allows each student to receive an individualized assessment that provides more precise data about student achievement.

For Science and Social Studies, ILEARN is an online fixed form assessment. This means that all students within a grade level will receive the same test questions when taking these assessments.

The primary test mode is online. Paper, Large Print, and Braille materials will only be available for students as an accommodation.

The Released Items Repository provides sample tests for each grade level and content area. Students can practice answering questions and using the different tools that are available.

Stay connected. Cramming for a test rarely results in the type of learning that will stay with your child throughout his or her life. The best preparation is to provide consistent support to your child throughout his or her education.

Know what’s expected. Read Indiana’s Academic Standards so you know what your child should know and be able to do, reinforce these expectations at home, and stay connected to your child’s academic performance throughout the year.

Check grades. Your son or daughter may say things are \\\"fine\\\" at school but don’t stop checking report cards, progress reports, or, if available, your child’s online grades or class progress.

Talk to the teacher. Teachers know how hard children are working, how well they are behaving, the quality of their homework and what areas need improvement. Collect e-mail addresses or phone numbers of all your child’s teachers and check in periodically.

Don’t buckle on homework. If your child is not studying at home, ask why, and double-check with teachers. It’s tough to hold the line, but making sure your child does his or her homework is important for academic success.

Ask for help. Students who are struggling in a particular class may need extra help after school or with a tutor. Find out from your school where you can go for help and make sure your student gets the help he or she needs. Catching a problem area now can make a big difference.

Go to parent meetings. Most schools offer parent nights or teacher/parent sessions that provide great information. Check your school’s calendar at the beginning of the year and plan to attend.

Get involved. Nothing will have a bigger impact on your student’s success than your involvement in his or her education.

ILEARN Checkpoints for Students in 3rd through 8th Grade

Starting this school year students in grades 3 -8 will participate in  ILEARN Checkpoint Pilot with the Indiana Department of Education.  ILEARN is Indiana’s standardized test.  It is an online computer adaptive assessment designed to measure students’ proficiency of the Indiana Academic Standards in English/Language Arts and Math.  While students have taken the ILEARN Assessment since the 2018-1019 school year, the checkpoint pilot gives students opportunities throughout the year.  70% of Indiana schools are piloting the ILEARN checkpoint assessments, and all Indiana schools are required to participate in the 2025-2026 school year.  

What is a computer-adaptive assessment? 

ILEARN is a computer-adaptive assessment, which adapts to each student’s mastery of content through the test.  This means that when a student answers a question, his or her response helps determine the next question.  The difficulty of the test will adjust to each student’s skills and provide a better measure of what each student knows and can do.  

When will my student take the ILEARN Checkpoint Assessment?

ILEARN Checkpoint #1

• September 18th - 27th

ILEARN Checkpoint #2

• December 11th - 20th

ILEARN Checkpoint #3

• February 26th - March 6th

*Each school will communicate the actual date ahead of time.  The ILEARN Checkpoint tests students in English/Language Arts and Math, and each test is approximately 20-25 questions.

IREAD-3

The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment measures foundational reading standards to Grade 3 students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010).

I AM

I AM measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana’s Content Connectors aligned to the Indiana Academic Standards. I AM is the summative accountability assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-8 and 10. It assesses:

• English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8 and 10)

• Mathematics (Grades 3-8 and 10)

• Science (Grades 4, 6, and Biology)

• Social Studies (Grade 5)

WIDA

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), requires state education agencies to establish and implement standardized, statewide entrance and exit procedures for English learners (ELs). In accordance with federal regulations, all states are required to:

• Identify the languages other than English present in their student population;

• Assess the language proficiency of students in order to place them in the appropriate language development program; and

• Administer an annual assessment of English proficiency, which includes measuring a student’s oral language, reading, and writing skills in English.

WIDA provides the English language proficiency placement and annual assessments administered in Indiana. WIDA Screener assessments are used to identify and inform initial programmatic placement of English Learners. WIDA ACCESS summative assessments are administered annually to determine an EL’s current level of English proficiency and to monitor students’ progress in learning academic English. WIDA ACCESS assessments are also used for accountability purposes.

NWEA

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth is an assessment for measuring achievement and growth in math and reading. It is administered three times per year to students in grades K-2.

Reading Fluency is administered three times per year to students in grades K-4. NWEA Reading Fluency is an assessment that monitors students’ oral reading fluency, literal comprehension, and foundational reading skills. This quick screener provides instructional data used to support student needs. NWEA Reading Fluency is the Universal Screener for MSD Warren Township. 

Early Reading Intervention

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, Indiana’s public and charter schools must meet added requirements to identify, as early as possible, struggling readers who show risk factors for dyslexia. Schools must provide systematic, sequential, and multisensory instruction to meet these students’ needs. MSD of Warren Township administers NWEA Reading Fluency to students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade to assess the six areas. These areas are phonological and phonemic awareness (ability to separate and change sounds in words), alphabet knowledge (name different letters), sound symbol relationship (phonics), decoding (reading), rapid naming (quickly name common objects), and encoding (spelling). Students who are “below expectation” on the universal screener will be considered by their school to be  “at risk” or “at some risk” for the characteristics of dyslexia. Students who are considered “at risk” or “at some risk” will receive targeted, intensive instruction to grow their foundational literacy skills.

All students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade were assessed using approved universal screeners. Of the 2,633 students tested, 958 students were found to be “at some risk” or “at risk” for dyslexia.

Of the 958 students that were found to be \\\"at some risk\\\" or \\\"at risk\\\" for dyslexia, 0 students were officially diagnosed with dyslexia.

PSAT

The PSAT 8/9 is a test that eighth & ninth graders take during the regular school day.  It’s the first test in the SAT Suite of Assessments, which includes PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT, and the SAT.  All the tests in the suite measure the knowledge and skills your child is learning in school-- the same knowledge and skills they’ll need to succeed in college.  Now that all grade 11 students are required by the state of Indiana to take the SAT exam, we want to make sure we are providing students every opportunity to be successful. 

• MSD of Warren Township has given the PSAT to 10th and 11th graders for a number of years.

• The PSAT 8/9 prepares students for PSAT in the 11th grade which is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).

  • This test qualifies students to receive scholarships based on their results.

• The SAT is the new graduation test for Indiana.

• The PSAT is the primer for SAT and ACT.

• Growth can now be shown over time since students will take the test in the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. 

• The PSAT 8/9 gives you, your child, and their teachers valuable information about your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses while there is plenty of time for them to improve their skills.

• The PSAT test will be utilized as a way to help identify which classes your child should take at Warren Central.

• PSAT will provide a score report that will pinpoint exactly what they need to work on to graduate from high school and be ready for college.

• PSAT score report also includes a section called AP Potential, which lets your child know which Advanced Placement (AP) courses they might be ready to take.

Students don’t have to discover secret tricks or cram the night before. The same habits and choices that lead to success in school will help students get ready for the PSAT 8/9. The best way to prepare is to encourage your child to do their homework, prepare for tests and quizzes, and ask and answer lots of questions. In short, students should take charge of their education and learn as much as possible.

The PSAT 8/9 measures what students learn in school and what students need to succeed in college. Each test assesses the academic skills that students have developed over the years through coursework. These skills are considered essential for success in high school and college and career. 

The PSAT 8/9 consists of three parts: reading, writing and language, and math.

The reading test consists of 42 passage-based questions and lasts 55 minutes. All questions are multiple-choice and based on passages. Some passages are paired with other passages or informational graphics such as charts, graphs, and tables. Prior topic-specific knowledge is never tested.

The writing and language test consists of 40 passage-based questions and lasts 30 minutes. All questions are multiple-choice and based on passages, and prior topic-specific knowledge is never tested. The writing and language test puts students in the active role of an editor who is improving a written passage. Most questions ask students to decide which, if any, of the three alternatives to an underlined part of a passage most improves it.

The math test consists of two sections with a total of 38 questions. Most math questions will be multiple-choice, but some will be student-produced responses (grid-ins). The math test is divided into two parts: calculator and no calculator. A calculator is NOT required to answer any of the questions in either section, but it is recommended that a student bring a scientific or graphing calculator that they are familiar with to the testing site.

• Please make sure your child is on time for school that day.

• Testing will begin in the morning and conclude by lunchtime in most cases.
